San Jose, CA: Haz-Mat Spill at JDS Uniphase

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A hazardous materials spill in San Jose has injured as many as 11 people, according to a San Jose Fire Department dispatcher.

Alberto Olmos of the San Jose Fire Department says 48 other workers are being sheltered in place at an adjacent building.

Olmos says a hazardous materials crew has been assembled to go into the building and investigate the situation.

Olmos says one worker told some others in a clean room at JDSU that he smelled something like burning rubber.

The spill at 80 Rose Orchard Way involves exposure to an unknown type of chemical and was reported to the Fire Department at 9:09 a.m.

Milpitas-based JDSU, an optical products company formerly known as JDS Uniphase, has a manufacturing facility at that address.

2 blocks from my office.

the part that disturbs me is the "unknown type of chemical"
